I always look forward to your musings Bertus, but this one I read a few times. Your gesturing at the credit takers reminds me of something I read three decades ago, when I was young. A professor of classics pointed out that a lot of what Sigmund Freud did was just repackage the implicit in Greek Mythology, make it explicit and slap the big label Science on it, and claim it as new territory of which he was the discoverer. That said, to be fair, it was kind of the thing at the time and everyone was doing it.
I haven’t read a lot of books but the ones I do I read closely. More than books I click with snatches of song lyrics, written by brilliant folks who, as you suggest, most people will never hear of.
Thank you Jeff, it is such an honour when people read closely and even more than once! I often feel I am writing songs with these weekly essays.
I may do a post on reading habits. Because I am a very slow reader, and finding ways to be proud of that took along time. Very connected to this slowing down to a walking pace to allow me to see through. Speed and a high frame-rate make opaque….
Hah and…. ‘The Credit Takers’ would be a perfect book title. Not yet written, but the sweet scent of its potential contents fascinates me…mmm...who knows….or am I now sparking someone else to beat me to it…….
Hah - I shall call my masterpiece The Shit Stealers, and the great work shall delve into how shit is created inside my head and no spark is required, either human or divine.
How's that for delayed cognition ... :)
Seriously - I think a post on reading habits will be excellent and you totally should. Looking forward to it.
And as the wondrous Niels Bohr put it, the opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one profound truth may very well be another profound truth.
This is wonderful, Bertus! As I was reading, at first I was focused on myself, thinking about how I am definitely not one of those wizzards. As a creature of liminal realms, I have to remind myself to get rooted here in the material more often than not. But the longer I read the words and digested, metabolized, I started to think they felt familiar. They described someone I know. Your words turned to images in my mind and I saw the wizzard's hands mapping and innovating. Then when I saw this wizzard's face, I realized it was my son. He's my kid, so I naturally think he's amazing, but I had never before known him in this framework of material magician. And he's exactly as you describe! He does not have the gap. Blessings to you for this! You've worked your own magic here for sure. And, as always, I'm in awe of your rendition of The Magus. I love that I'm not sure if he's just climbed out of the well, or if he's thinking about heading into it. Or both. Now, I'm off to call my son!

Slow down
Slow down
Do you see
Through me?
Wake now
Sleeper
I heard an echo through
A universal truth

Yes, I know just who you speak so accurately of!
